AN ELDERLY couple were rescued by fire crews after getting trapped in a snowdrift in Egton.

A man and his wife had driven into the drift but were unable to get out last Friday.

The woman had undergone surgery in hospital the week before the incident.

They tried to dig themseleves out in freezing weather conditions for more than two hours before help arrived .

The breakdown company they contacted would not attend.

Fire crews from Goathland and Whitby arrived on the scene on the remote Egton to Stape road at 7.30pm.

They managed to get the couple and their vehicle to the safety of a local hotel.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Usually the Fire Service only attend life risk incidents but on this occasion an exception was made.”
