Countdown to Whitby stores meeting

THE date has now been set in stone for a planning meeting which will decide which of the town's three supermarket bids will be given the go-ahead.

The committee meeting on Thursday 29 July will start at 1pm and will take place at Whitby Community College.

Members will discuss and vote on plans for a Sainsbury's, Tesco and Whitby Co-op's 3m extension bid.

Coun Derek Bastiman, cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: "We are holding this meeting in Whitby due to the amount of local interest these proposals have generated. Whitby Community College is an accessible and spacious venue, which should accommodate all who wish to listen to the debate and see the outcome for themselves."

Scarborough Borough Council's planning manager Jill Low said: "We are aware that these planning applications are of great interest to local people and we anticipate a strong attendance from local residents and businesses.

"Details of our usual public speaking arrangements are available on our website.

"Opportunities for public speaking are limited however, to one in support and one against, in addition to a representative from Whitby Town Council and borough ward councillors, who also have the right to speak.

"Any member of the public wishing to speak must register their intention with the council's planning support team at least two working days prior to the meeting.

"If several people wish to speak, they will be put in touch with each other so that they can decide upon a spokesperson and discuss the content of the matters to be raised.

"All other written representations, consultation responses and comments we have received regarding these applications will be summarised in the report to the planning and development committee, which will be available a week in advance of the meeting, in the usual way."

Details of all three planning applications are available on www.scarborough.gov.uk and the committee report will be available from 22 July – the same date as a public meeting organised by the town council at Whitby Pavilion where people can voice their views on the supermarkets.
