Councillors agree to Whitby and district tax hike - HAVE YOUR SAY

WHITBY residents will be paying an extra 2.74% – excluding parish precepts – on their council tax this year.

The new rate was approved at Friday's full council meeting, where Scarborough Council voted for a 2% hike in its share of the tax.

Scarborough Council receives just 14% of the council tax it collects, with the rest of the money being divided between North Yorkshire County Council, the police and the fire service.

The county council has announced a 2.94% rise, the police 2.7% and the fire service 2%. Whitby Town Council eclipsed all of these with a 19% rise of its own.

The lowest property band has broken the 1,000-a-year barrier for the first time and the highest band is now at more than 3,000.

A family living in an average Band D property will pay 42.70 extra overall for 2010-11. Some residents will pay more than 85 extra.
