Council wants ideas for new recycle sites

GLASS recycling sites in Whitby are being sought by Scarborough Borough Council.

The council is hoping to place 12 small glass recycling units on the borough’s streets.

However, it is struggling to find sites in the town and is asking residents to suggest areas they can be placed.

Steve Reynolds, the authority’s environment manager, told the Whitby Gazette: “The sites need to be on land owned by the council or with a landowner who is willing to let us use their land.

“They are not too large and are acoustically dampened to reduce noise.

“Any placed would be for a trial period and if residents weren’t happy then the bins could be moved.”

The council’s cabinet has also heard that glass recycling services could be expanded further, once the authority takes delivery of a new vehicle to carry out the work.

The new glass-collecting wagon is due to be bought this year, but its purchase has been delayed due to hold-ups in the manufacturing process, and it will not now be on Scarborough’s streets until the autumn.

The council had hoped to up its recycling record by using the two bin wagons in concert for a period.

Mr Reynolds told the cabinet: “We are not now going to see the second recycling vehicle until later in the year.

“However, the 12 small recycling units are waiting to go out within the next three to four weeks and will increase the amount of glass we recycle in the borough, but only to the extent they can be serviced with the existing vehicle.”

The council has been set a target of recycling 40% of the town’s waste in 2009-10 – it is currently achieving 39.7%, an improvement of 1.7% on last year.

In addition the council has served more than 500 statutory notices and 222 fixed penalty notices for littering and other waste offences – with 28 of the fixed penalty notices resulting in legal action.

A further 84 prosecutions were instigated for offences such as fly-tipping.
