A CARE home in Sleights is cooking up some tasty treats to raise cash for Comic relief.

Staff and residents at Esk Hall Care Home in Sleights started preparations this week for a baking marathon ready for Comic relief next Friday.

There will be a tea party at the home from 2pm-4pm and local people are also invited to drop in for coffee and cake as well as take part in a Comic Relief sweepstake to win a cream tea.

The idea was the brainchild of catering manager Hannah Dowler, a former nun who worked with abused children in Swaziland as part of her spell in a Johannesburg convent.

Hannah said as well as having family and friends along it would be a good opportunity for people to see the results of a recent refurbishment at the home.

She added: “We plan to make it a real occasion, with fresh tea and an array of mouth-watering cakes all served on our best china. Everyone is welcome, and hopefully lots of people will drop in and enjoy tea and cake in our conservatory, where they can sit and enjoy the spectacular views

“From my time in South Africa I know what a difference Comic Relief money makes. Just £150 will help vaccinate 30 children against deadly diseases like tetanus and hepatitis B, so we are hoping to raise as much as we can on the day.”
