Consultation starts on housing and store plan - HAVE YOUR SAY
PEOPLE can have their say today and tomorrow on ambitious plans for a £40m Tesco supermarket and housing scheme for High Stakesby – and a £3m extension at Whitby's Co-operative supermarket.
Consultations on both proposals start today.
S Harrison – the developer behind the Tesco scheme – has released a new detailed plan showing how the site which includes plans for 90 affordable homes for local families, a supermarket and extra care facilities, might look if it wins backing from Scarborough Borough Council.
A public consultation and exhibition will take place today at Whitby Coliseum today from noon until 7pm. The consultation will also take place tomorrow, again at the Coliseum, between 10am and 1pm.
Harrison director David Clancy told the Whitby Gazette: "We are conscious people who work in Whitby may want to pop in and see the exhibition during their lunchtime on Friday, hence the plan to extend the opening times.
"We're confident what we are proposing will deliver real benefits to Whitby residents and we are keen for as many local people as possible to see it for themselves and tell us their views.
"There are those from outside the town who have their own agenda, but we have put forward a proposal which will really meet the needs of local people – for new affordable houses and for affordable extra care facilities for older people.
"By bringing a new petrol filling station and a new price-competitive supermarket to the town we will encourage more people to stay in Whitby to do their shopping and that has to be good news for the town."
S Harrison is producing a leaflet outlining the scheme and is inviting residents to have their say.
People are asked to give their views by 14 November so they can be taken into consideration before S Harrison puts its proposals to the council later this year.
The consultation for Whitby Co-op's extension, which will create up to 30 jobs, also takes place today and tomorrow in the foyer of its store in Langborne Road
Representatives from the Co-operative's project team will be available to explain the proposals and to answer any questions today between 1pm and 6pm and from 10am until noon tomorrow.
Following the public consultation, The Co-operative will submit a planning application to Scarborough Borough Council.
