College paper hits headlines

STUDENTS and staff at Whitby Community College are celebrating after winning a national newspaper competition.

The Newsday 2008 competition was run by the Guardian newspaper and 40 students participated in designing and producing school newspaper The Apollo in just one day.

The school beat 14 others from throughout the UK to win the best advert category, a distinction and the Key Stage 5 category.

Three of the 40 students were chosen to travel to The Guardian's Head Office in London to attend the presentation ceremony.

Michelle Waudby, Learning Centre Manager said: "I was quietly confident we had a strong chance of winning as I knew our advert was of very good quality and the students had worked so hard."

"We were delighted to walk away with all three awards.

"The prizes included two AlphaSmart Neos – a notebook style of PC – and a subscription for the school to the Guardian educational website which is worth 100."

The AlphaSmart Neos will be used by the Special Educational Needs department at the school.

Students Rachel Halliday (17), David Sawer (17) and Nicola Graham (14) made the most of their time in the capital.

Accompanied by Mrs Waudby and geography teacher Jane Davies, they spent the morning in Covent Garden before the Guardian awards presentation in the afternoon.

They also went for a cruise on the River Thames and a meal in China Town.

"We had a wonderful time, it was great fun. It was a long day – we were on the go from 7am until midnight but because we were travelling all that way we were determined to make the most of it," added Mrs Waudby.
