Cliff erosion battle: hopes over research in Robin Hood's Bay
THE first stage of work to protect the Robin Hood's Bay coastline will begin on Monday.
A team will carry out a ground investigation study at Mount Pleasant as part of the ongoing Robin Hood's Bay Coastal Strategy Study.
The study covers a wide coastal strip from Abbey Cliffs in Whitby down to Hundale Point near Cloughton.
The investigation works will be carried out by a specialist contractor on behalf of Scarborough Council, funded entirely by grant aid from DEFRA and the Environment Agency.
The work is expected to run for three to five weeks.
Four boreholes will be drilled at strategically identified sites to allow a soil profile to be identified and understood.
It will be necessary to drill down to the base of the cliffs to determine the presence or absence of existing shear planes – the dividing line between a permeable material such as sand and an impermeable material like clay.
This will provide information about the stability of the cliffs in this area and help to identify any remedial measures that might be deemed necessary.
Coun Jane Mortimer, ward councillor for the Fylingdales area, supports the strategy study.
She said: "The ground investigation is good news for the village and it is also great to know that positive work is being undertaken to help defend Robin Hood's Bay and sustain the village in the long term."
