Children's treasure hunt - with sat nav
YOUNGSTERS enjoyed an unusual treasure hunt thanks to the North York Moors National Park Authority.
The pupils from Hawsker-cum-Stainsacre Primary School took part in a geocache trail along the Cleveland Way.
Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where the children find hidden containers or caches using hand-held GPS and maps.
In the event, led by Heather McNiff, the national park's education officer and staff, the group set off at the car park overlooking Robin Hood's Bay.
They then walked to Ravenscar along the Cleveland Way locating other temporary boxes hidden by park staff.
The caches included various activities for the children to participate in related to the fossils and wildlife they came across on their walk.
At the alum works in Ravenscar, the children were met by staff from the National Trust who helped them hide a new official cache. The new cache includes a special geocoin – a trackable item which is moved from cache to cache by people who find it.
Heather said: "Geocaching is becoming very popular and is a great way to get children out in the fresh air as it turns a walk into much more of an adventure.
"Each geocoin has its own unique ID so the children will be able to use the internet to track their coin as it travels around the UK and possibly overseas."
The geocache event was organised as part of Coast Alive – a new European project designed to explore different ways of getting people involved in healthy activities along the coastline of the North Sea.
Over the next few weeks, children from Seton School in Staithes will take part in geocache walks along their local stretch of the Cleveland Way National Trail.
