Celebrations for centenarian Joy

FAMILY from all over the world are travelling to town this weekend to help a woman celebrate her 100th birthday.

Joy Ash, who lives at Peregrine House in Upgang Lane, celebrated with a party with family and friends on Tuesday.

And more of her family will be jetting in from as afar afield as France, Thailand and Malaysia for lunch this weekend.

Joy, who has five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, was born in London on 31 March 1909 to Eva and Alfred Jordan but sadly she never saw her father as he had died just a few weeks previously.

At school in south London, Joy’s acting abilities developed and her teacher told her mother that Joy should take up acting as a career.

But Mrs Jordan was incensed as she considered that acting was not something a nice girl should take up as a profession.

Later in life Joy used these abilities in the parents drama group at the school her children attended.

On leaving school Joy worked as a secretary in London until she married and started a family.

In 1933 she married Ernest Ash, head gardener at St Thomas Hospital in London and they had two children David and Pamela.

In 1940 they moved to Milford, Surrey, when part of the hospital was moved nearby during the war.

Ernest grew produce in the extensive grounds, which was sent to London to supply the part of the hospital which remained there.

Ernest died in 1994 and in 1999 Joy went to live with her daughter Pam and son-in-law Alan Newton in Lealholm and moved into Peregrine House last July.

All three attend Whitby Evangelical Church where she made many friends.

Her daughter said all her life Joy has lived up to her name and many of the cards received make mention of the joy she has brought into the lives of others.
