Canoeists raise oarsome amount

CANOE enthusiasts from East Barnby took up the challenge of a Bank Holiday fund-raising coastal paddle along the Yorkshire coast, despite enduring some turbulent weather.

A total of five keen kayakers from the East Barnby Canoe Club completed the three-day sponsored journey from Staithes to Flamborough, raising 1,200 for the RNLI so far.

Team member Angela Bullamore said: "It was a challenging paddle in challenging conditions.

"We set off earlier than planned on Friday morning, as there was such a bad forecast for Sunday's weather.

"The conditions were really rough and at times it was quite tricky."

The group wildcamped on beaches overnight during the challenge, cooking their own meals.

They received a warm welcome from the team at the RNLI Station at Filey as they stopped off en route for a cup of tea.

Mrs Bullamore said: "We chose the RNLI because it is a worthy cause and it is poignant because we are all users of the sea.

"You just never know when you will need to call upon them.

"The charity just seemed to link up well with what we were doing."

The efforts received support from friends, family and members of the Whitby Sea Angling Forum.

Ending at North Landing in Flamborough at 9am, the quintet celebrated with a huge full English breakfast.

After their great success, another paddle challenge has been suggested, although the group are keen to attempt it at a different location.

The group are hoping to still add more to their fund-raising total and anybody who would still like to sponsor the group can visit www.justgiving.com/YorkshireCoastPaddle2010
