Bowling club hoping to hit the jack-pot

THE FIRST of a series of fundraisers to raise the bowling club from the ashes is being held later this month.

An evening of music, an auction, raffle and tombola will be held at the Saxonville on Thursday 16 February starting at 7.30pm.

It is to try and raise cash to put towards the rebuilding of Whitby Bowling Club which was severely damaged in an arson attack at the beginning of January.

The club committee is looking into replacing the wooden structure with a brick or concrete one and is trying to raise the £60,000 needed.

Michael Allenby from the club said: “People were originally talking about patching the place up but they will only set fire to it again.

“A wooden building is not going to be viable. We want a brick one or a concrete block, it would not cost all that much.

“Everybody was wondering where are we going to get the money from but unless you get the ball rolling..

“I have been in touch with several people this week and everything looks pretty promising.”

The insurance money will only cover so much of the rebuilding costs and it is hoped that Whitby businesses and individuals will get behind the club which has been going for over 100 years and has an active membership.

Mr Allenby added: “It is a crucial part of the community. I know it is crown green which a lot of people don’t know about. I must admit I have only been a member for a couple of years and it is great fun really.”

The club is open to the public and during the summer people can play for the day for £4.
