Bloom group in Ruswarp

THE Whitby in Bloom group got down and dirty with the Ruswarp Garden Society to create some new fencing in the village.

Whitby in Bloom, together with The Ruswarp Garden Society, worked in conjunction with Scarborough Borough Council to put up a birdsmouth fence on the Green at Ruswarp.

Popular for creating an attractive and strong boundary, birdsmouth fencing is particularly popular in car parks and play areas.

The work was aimed at protecting the grass verges from careless parking and creating a nice area for walkers and others to relax in and enjoy the flowers.

The Bloom Group won some money in a national competition called Action Earth to support this local initiative.

It has helped improve Ruswarp by erecting the fence and the activity is part of a five-month campaign called CSV Action Earth supported by Morrisons supermarket.

The campaign is organised by the UK's leading volunteering and training charity Community Service Volunteers.

Each year more than 900 voluntary organisations, businesses and community groups undertake projects that benefit the environment.

Mark Harrison of Morrisons said: "We are pleased to support this local project because of the benefits it is making to biodiversity in the local area."

Susan Davies, who is co-ordinating the project, said she wants to see as many people as possible help with ongoing work.

"We are looking for Action Earth Heroes to join us on our environmental projects to learn new skills, and do something really worthwhile for the community.

"It's everyone's responsibility to do their bit to tackle climate change."
