Bishop of Whitby has heart attack

THE Bishop of Whitby is recovering in hospital in Italy after suffering a heart attack while on holiday.

The Right Rev Martin Warner took ill in Florence on Monday 23 August.

The 51-year-old was thought to have been alone on holiday and is understood to have had a cardiac arrest.

A church spokeswoman said Rev Warner is being "very well looked after" by the doctors and Anglican community.

She said: "One churchwarden from one of the churches in Florence has been visiting him every day.

"He is getting better and better every day.

"All the reports are really positive, he is out of intensive care and being looked after in the cardiac ward.

"He has been undergoing tests to find out why this happened, because he is a very fit man, who does a lot of cycling.

"It has been a real shock."

Rev Warner was appointed in January this year. He succeeded the Right Reverend Robert Ladds who retired in 2006.

It is not yet known when Rev Warner will be well enough to leave hospital and return home.

Canon David Smith, Rector of Whitby, said all the congregations in the Whitby area and across the diocese are praying for the bishop.

He said: "They are hoping as soon as he is well enough to get him back into the UK.

"He's the fittest priest we've got in the diocese.

"He cycles and he walks. Because of all the things he does it's quite a shock, nobody expected it.

"He's one of the youngest bishops we have in England.

"Everyone has just got to know him in that sense and then this happens. Everyone is rooting for him. We just wish him a speedy recovery."
