Bay hosts new battle of Waterloo

NAPOLEON and Wellington with their armies will fight the battle of Waterloo again – but this time Napoleon will meet his Waterloo in Robin Hood's Bay village hall with the aim of raising money for present-day heroes through the Help for Heroes fund.

And aspiring Napoleons and Wellingtons are needed to help the historic battle.

The event will take place over two days later this month and 12 players will be needed on each occasion.

Organisers Kelvin Pickup, who runs Scarborough War Games club and Paul Johnston, chairman of Robin Hood's Bay village hall committee, use 25mm high miniature metal figures to represent the warring armies.

In the past two months, Kelvin has painstakingly painted a thousand of them.

Paul said: "This is really a warm-up for next year when we intend to make a bid on the world record either in Whitby or Scarborough when we'll re-enact 10 battles from the Peninsula War.We use a table the size of a badminton court and anyone can join in.

"It's a good spectacle and people can come in and watch for a bit and then go out and come back later.

"We charge the players 20 for the weekend and we'll also be charging for tea, coffee and lunches that we'll provide. We just ask the people who come to watch for a donation to the fund.

"A lot of people enjoy playing with toy soldiers at any age and also are interested in history so this combines the two."

The re-enactments are tomorrow and Sunday from 10am each day. All proceeds will be donated to the Help for Heroes charity.
