Artists throw open their studio doors

ARTISTS across the Whitby area will be opening up their studios to give the public a glimpse into their work this month.

The 2009 North Yorkshire Open Studios event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with more than 100 artists taking part across the country including many in the Whitby area.

The event runs this Saturday and Sunday and then the following Friday to Sunday.

There are a selection of artists and makers in and around Whitby taking part this year – and one of the pleasures of this event is the sheer range of works on show, from stained glass, knitted jewellery and miniature paper shoes to sculpture, paintings and pottery.

Among the designers and craft makers taking part are feltmaker Brigid Moss from Moorside in Glaisdale, who creates cushions, slippers and scarves; jeweller Lynne Glazzard from Holly Barn, Glaisdale who is currently artist in residence at Whitby Museum and Alan Davis, who creates stained glass for buildings throughout the UK from his studio in Lythe.

Ceramic lovers should pay a visit to Ailsa Nicholson's studio in Ruswarp where she creates decorative sculptural forms and also to Sneaton Pottery where John Egerton creates functional pots with decoration inspired by nature.

While at Sneaton Pottery you can also visit Juliet MacMichael, whose most recent work is a series of sea paintings.

There is a good selection of painters in this year's event including Janet Moodie, whose work reflects her environment, she will be showing her work at the Grosmont Gallery in Grosmont.

Heather Gatt, at the Green Lane Centre, whose paintings explore light and the way it can transform or dramatise a subject, rock pool reflections at Saltwick Bay and the North Yorkshire coast are themes of recent work.

At Bank House Farm Studio in Aislaby, Anne Thornhill and Paul Blackwell will be showing a range of paintings inspired by the landscape and in a former tractor shed at Commondale, Caroline Riley will show work in progress which includes a series of tree paintings for her forthcoming exhibition at the Moors Centre.

Running alongside the open studios is a programme of artist-led workshops, talks and other events, including A Sketchbook Making Workshop led by bookbinder Steve Iredale at the Moors National Park Centre, Danby a week on Saturday.

There is free entry to all the artist studios from 10.30am to 5.30pm on each participating day.
