Amazing escape for two boys in Whitby cliff drama

TWO boys were winched to safety by helicopter after becoming cut off by the tide between Whitby and Saltwick yesterday afternoon.

The coastguards and the town's inshore lifeboat rushed to the scene after the boys called 999 from a mobile phone to say they had got cut off by the tide.

Whitby Gazette photographer Ceri Oakes captured images of the dramatic rescue from the clifftop.

The boys had climbed to safety on a cliff ledge but were stuck there for over an hour until a helicopter from RAF Boulmer winched them to safety as the lifeboat was unable to anchor due to a strong backwash of water.

Humber Coastguard were alerted at 2.40pm today and the boys were rescued shortly after 4pm.

The boys, who are believed to have been looking for jet or fossils, are thought to have been taken to hospital for check-ups.
