MOUSTACHIOED RAF staff took a Mo-ment to appreciate their whiskers before they were shaven off last Thursday.

As part of the international month of Movember, which raises awareness of men’s cancer, staff at RAF Fylingdales grew their best moustaches to compete for the title of ‘Man of Movember’.

Ladies from Capello’s Hair and Beauty Salon, which has recently opened a new studio in Sleights, were given the task of returning the men to their usual neatly-trimmed appearance and Wing Commander Rayna Owens said: “I’m delighted with the efforts from everyone who took part. Thanks must go to Alison Hodgson, Rachel Ward and Holly Newton as they helped make the evening a complete success.”

Not since Anthony Edwards showcased a hefty lip-tickler as Goose in Top Gun have moustaches been so popular among airforce personnel. 38 willing volunteers competed for the overall ‘Man of Movember’ title for best moustache, with Flight Lieutenant Tim Adcock judged the winner by WC Owens.

At the other end of the scale Senior Aircraftman Mark Paynter was given the ‘Miss Movember’ sash for his weak effort.

The Movember Charity helps fight prostate and testicular cancer with the aim of raising awareness of men’s health and the ‘Big Shave-off’ held at the RAF base raised £300, to be donated to the charity.
