Action plan for East Side revamp
SETTING up links to potash jobs, holding employment workshops, creating extra allotments and painting the sides of houses form a raft of ideas which have been drawn up as part of a masterplan to revamp the east side of Whitby.
The Eastside Action Plan is the result of a year of meetings, discussions and research by a working group made up of residents, councillors and Groundwork North Yorkshire - a charity which helps transform neighbourhoods.
It sets out the main issues and challenges facing life on the east side, divided into four areas - Church Street/Green Lane, Helredale/St Peter’s, Eskdale Road and the Business Park - and some suggestions for tackling them.
The report says action was needed after local people and organisations called for changes.
It says: “East Whitby is a great place to live but also an acknowledgement that it has some problems and issues that need to be improved. This Action Plan represents a vision for the future of the Eastside, an aspiration for the kind of community and neighbourhood we want to be part of.”
The Action Eastside Steering Group is looking for feedback on the proposals for improving the east side and for more residents, businesses and agencies to get involved.
It will then oversee the implementation and management of the plan over a five year period.
But the group admits some of the proposals are “ambitious and far-reaching” and need external funding which might be difficult but believe the action plan report will boost funding bids.
It adds: “Competition for external funding is fierce, particularly in the current economic climate when match funding from local organisations is limited.
“However, having the Action Eastside Plan in place as an agreed and well supported strategy for the area will considerably strengthen the Eastside’s position in funding bids.”
