A bloody plan for Whitby Goth Weekend
DRACULA has long been associated with Whitby and now future visitors to Whitby Gothic Weekend could leave with less blood than they arrived with.
Organisers were hoping the National Blood Service will bring a van to the event later this month to allow people to have their blood drained for a good cause, although it may not prove possible this year.
For as long as there has been a gothic movement it has been synonymous with Dracula but never before have you been able to have your blood sucked at the event.
Jo Hoyle, of Sneaton, organisers of the gothic weekend, said she was hoping the blood service would send a van to the event, which starts on 25 April.
She said: "I have been in contact with the National Blood Service to see if they were interested in bringing a van to the weekend.
"I think it will be very quirky and the vampire lot will love it and will get their teeth into it and with Whitby's Dracula links it seems perfect.
"Hopefully people will come along to get their blood sucked on the way to the pub on the morning.
"I really do hope it all comes off in the future."
Ever since Bram Stoker made the town the centrepiece to his gothic horror novel the two have been intrinsically linked.
Thousands of tourists flock to Whitby each year to see the places Stoker mentioned in his masterpiece, including the Abbey and St Mary's Church.
The gothic look of period clothing and dark coats comes straight from the pages on the book and walk around the town on any goth weekend and you can see fangs out in force.
A spokeswoman for the National Blood Service said no vans would be available in time for this year's event as they are booked a year in advance but said it could be a possibility in the future.
