A rosy summer for town
IT'S been a rosy summer for Whitby – and that's official.
The borough is celebrating following a landslide of gold and silver gilt medals at this year’s prestigious Yorkshire in Bloom awards.
Following months of hard work, Whitby has been awarded a silver gilt rose award in the coastal category, competing against Scarborough and Filey, who are also silver gilt rose winners.
Representatives of the local communities were all delighted to receive their awards at The Spa in Bridlington.
Yorkshire in Bloom criteria featured the addition of heritage, art in the landscape and pride of place this year.
And Whitby in Bloom’s demonstration of inclusion of heritage into its bloom projects won a discretionary award of ‘Local Roots’.
Kadir Jonturk (11), from Whitehall Landing, who made such an impact in his neighbourhood with his garden, benefitting his whole community; jointly shared the Yorkshire in Bloom young people’s award, along with Scarborough’s Ricky Nock.
Bloom preparations continue now in readiness for the town’s best kept gardens awards held at Pannett Park on 30 September.
Coun David Jeffels, SBC’s cabinet member for tourism, leisure and community services portfolio, said the results were outstanding.
“The results acknowledge the hard work by Roger Burnett and the council’s parks and countryside services staff and also the wonderful work put in by the Friends groups.
“These successes underline the quality of our environment and the businesses and people who support the council’s aspirations to keep us at the top of the British resorts league table.
“The outstanding floral displays and excellent on-going clean-ups have been fantastic and I thank them all for their support which has paid such excellent dividends.
“We now look forward to next year’s Britain in Bloom finals with enthusiasm.”
Susan Davies, chairman of Whitby in Bloom, said: “We were proud to be able to bring home so many awards.
“We know how much superb work goes on across the town. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this.
“Let’s see how many more entries we can put forward next year.
“There is an opportunity for everyone to show what they can do and so many categories to choose from, so let’s start now to plan for 2010.”
The next Bloom meeting is in Pannett Park on Wednesday 7 October at 6pm.
Mrs Davies added: “We welcome new members and if anyone would like to contact me to learn how to put their garden, business or community on the map I would love to hear from them.”
