£1m scheme to tackle footpath issues
PAVEMENTS and footpaths in Whitby and the area could benefit from part of a £1m investment from North Yorkshire County Council.
A programme of maintenance work is being drawn up to ensure more pedestrians enjoy safe and comfortable walking surfaces over the county’s 200km of pavements and footpaths.
North Yorkshire’s highways department has a long-established routine of essential maintenance work to keep the footways in prime condition. But the new 1m fund will provide resources for preventative work designed to avoid the need for more substantial repairs.
County councillor John Fort, Executive Member for Highways, said: “We have many miles of footways in our towns and villages.
“There is a continuing programme of maintenance work, as you would expect. But with this extra pot of money, we can identify problems almost before they happen, and initiate some quick remedial work which will prevent more serious problems developing later.
“This 1m scheme will allow us to microsurface some 200 km of footways, and will result in a notable improvement in a very short timescale.”
The microsurfacing technique uses a surface treatment comprising bitumen, stone, and sand, to smooth over uneven surfaces.
The council is now looking at footpaths including those in the Whitby area to see which will benefit most although specific areas have not been confirmed yet.
