Whitby RNLI's inshore lifeboat launched on Wednesday evening along with the Coastguard to reports of four people cut off by the tide near Battery Parade.

The call came in from the a member of the public, who had spotted the four people from the West Pier.

On arrival at the scene it became apparent that the people in question were able to make their own way to safety.

Volunteer crew member and inshore lifeboat helm Martyn Cairns said: "We would always rather launch the boat and make sure people are safe, even when it is a false alarm. The member of the public who alerted the emergency services did the right thing by letting us know so that we could assess the situation and make a rescue if required."

We would like to remind people to check the tide times when visiting the beach.

If you see someone you think might be in danger you can contact the coastguard by calling 999.
