The people of Staithes do care

I read with horror and consternation the article of 15 March headed ‘I drive by when I see village sign Staithes’.

It was then when I came to the paragraph - ‘you should resign yourself to the fact that Staithes does not care whether you visit or not’ - I became outraged.

How dare he. As an original of Staithes of some 76 years and having lived and travelled worldwide I have seen some horrendous sights and smells, he makes Staithes seem like the aftermath of Tsunami.

The people of Staithes do care. We have a very dedicated council employee who does a magnificent job of cleaning the village and if anything above his job is brought to his attention he will do his utmost to resolve it. But the writer puts the cap fairly and squarely on the right head when he mentions Scarborough Borough Council. They do not seem to care about these little villages and concentrate money, time and effort on Scarborough, as he duly notes. We have people who have come to live in the village who do their utmost to bring some life to Staithes and who invest a lot of time, effort and money in property. Please do them some justice.

And as for the polluted beach and water, this is because of the groin being in the wrong place and the cutting off of the tidal flow from the north and south sides of the piers, which has never been rectified. Please don’t blame the locals, blame bureaucracy and the indifference of the council who should care, but don’t.

Oh, and by the way, my husband has a blue badge and as we live at the top of the bank and as he cannot walk more than a few feet after suffering a stroke, finds it impossible to visit our old home on the seafront, and know why, it’s because since the council laid the new cobblestones it shakes him up so much it makes him ill.

So writer, if you have any clout at all, get in touch with Scarborough Borough Council and justify your remarks. You never know, you may succeed where others have failed.

Re: The Staithes article published last Wednesday I would like to comment on the article regarding Staithes that was published in the Whitby Gazette last Wednesday. First of all I’m surprised the Whitby Gazette even included this utter insult. I can understand that receiving a parking ticket is upsetting, but let’s face it if everyone parked where they wanted it would be bedlam! Rules and regulations are there for a reason, if you break them you take the consequences. There is very limited parking in Staithes for a reason; it’s a small village with a single track road! Thought has to go to the Emergency Services e.g. Police, Fire Engines, Ambulances, Life Boat Crew and Coast Guard who may need access in an emergency, not to mention the locals who constantly have to battle to get out of the village in their own cars due to certain visitors ignoring the parking restriction signs at the top of the bank. Staithes is an old historic fishing village that attracts people from all over the world. Some come here due to the connection with Captain Cook, others just like the tranquility along with the old worldly experience, not to mention the friendly locals. The infrastructure of this village evolved from the horse and cart; not the modern car and for that reason restrictions are in place. There are many hard working people in Staithes who provide a fantastic service to the community and visitors alike, from the people who own and run Bistro’s, Café’s, Public Houses, and Shops to mention a few, but lets not forget to mention the Hard Working Traffic Warden who, lets be fare is only doing his job by enforcing the rules and regulations set out for us ALL! I would like to say to the person who’s derogatory comments regarding Staithes in general seem a bit extreme for a simple parking ticket letter that was published in a previous publication. You should read the local papers my friend; for instance the hard working chivalrous Taxi driver in Whitby who was ticketed by an unscrupulous private parking company whilst helping an old lady with her shopping; my god what would you write about Whitby? I can only think that every time you drive past Staithes the people in your Village must be missing their IDIOT! Disgruntled Staithes businessman and resident. JP
