Letter: Future of Whitby in hands of our councillors

I was extremely surprised and shocked to learn that Whitby Town Council’s planning committee had on Tuesday night decided to approve change of use of our Tourist Information Centre into a restaurant and ice cream parlour.

It is a matter of public record that Cllrs P Trumper, N Wilson, R Pearson, and N Smith voted not to oppose Scarborough Borough Council’s disgraceful decision to denude one of the UK’s foremost tourist towns of its major information outlet.

The best they could do was to think up some inconsequential “conditions”, and the sum total of their combined intellectual musings was... ‘Well they will do it anyway’.

With a bunch of lily-livered town councillors and our Scarborough Borough Council members toeing the party line at every excuse, what chance does Whitby have?

Let’s hope that come any future town or borough elections, the residents of Whitby remember who sold their town down the river. Luckily there will be some of us there to remind them.
