IN a move that will gain them many fans across the town, Kristy’s Beauty Salon on Flowergate celebrated their first birthday in an unusual manner by waxing the chests of Whitby’s traffic wardens.

Causing pain to traffic wardens is something everyone has wanted to do at one time or another and when all the proceeds go to Cancer Research UK the day was destined to be a huge success.

Staff members also dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland for a Mad Hatter’s tea party throughout the day.

Kristy’s Erica Legg said “We had a really great day.

“Customers brought in birthday cards to wish us a happy first birthday and we raised £240 for cancer research through the waxing and a raffle with super prizes donated from most of our suppliers.

“Passers-by stopped to look through the window at the waxing and when we said they could buy a wax strip for a pound to ensure the job got finished they all put their hands in their pockets and gave generously.

“We planned on closing at 4pm but as well-wishers kept on coming we didn’t get closed until 5.30pm, it really was a busy day but all the staff really enjoyed it and got into the spirit of their character.”
