A CONTROVERSIAL plan to redevelop Whitby’s old Magistrates’ Court was given the green light at a planning meeting on 26 May.
The decision to go ahead with the plans was made despite opposition from residents and Whitby Town Council, who recommended that the plan be refused.
However, the Planning and Development Committee at Scarborough Borough Council decided to approve the plans, so the old courthouse at Waterstead Lane will now be replaced by a 47 bedroom elderly care home.
Residents had feared that the area would suffer as a result of the development and the planning committee has attached strict conditions to the planning approval, such as the Local Planning Authority examining samples of materials to be used in the building prior to its construction.
This would ensure that the building does not stand out from other buildings in the area.
