A DANBY teacher is hoping to fulfil a lifetime ambition when she takes part in a 200 mile charity bike ride in India.
Carol Johnson (56) is presently training hard to raise her target of £2,800 in aid of the charity Women against Cancer.
She said: “I’m getting on my bike to take positive action in the fight against cancer. The money will help provide funding for research and to support families affected by this devastating illness.
“In doing this I’ll be able to fulfil one of my life ambitions to take part in a charity cycling event.
“I’m paying the full cost of my travelling expenses amounting to £1,400 myself so that all the sponsorship money I raise will go directly to the charities involved.”
Carol, of Ainthorpe Lane, has already had a long distance practice ride when she persuaded her children Ben (29), Kate (26) and their friend Lydia Thompson to go with her on a sponsored ride from their home in Danby to Newcastle. The 80 mile long journey took them almost 13 hours.
She said: “We completed it successfully although we were the worse for wear by the end but I’m really looking forward to the India ride.
“The first women only team of cyclists riding through India to support women’s cancer charities took place last year.
“The ride will take five days and be both on and off road, experiencing rural India away from the usual tourist trails.
“I’m told it’s a beautiful country and I expect it’ll be an enormous learning curve for me.”
Carol is asking for donations or sponsorship to help her reach her target. All the money raised will be donated to three women’s cancer charities, Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Trust and Ovarian Cancer Care and a donation will also be made to an Indian cancer charity.
