In the Hotseat - Ex-MP Lembit Opik’s love of Whitby and district

EX-politician Lembit Opik has a real love for the Whitby area in more ways than one.

The 45-year-old has been dating local lass, Merily McGivern, who is originally from Hinderwell, since last July but has been a regular visitor to the area as his late brother Endel was a goth.

Lembit was the MP for the constituency of Montgomeryshire in Wales from 1997 until he lost his seat in the 2010 General Election.

His television appearances include a charity edition of The Apprentice for Sport Relief and then he faced quiz master Chris Tarrant on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, scooping £64,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Action for Children.

Last June, he made his debut as a stand-up comedian at the Backstage Comedy Club in London’s West End.

But his most high profile appearance by far was taking part in ITV’s hit reality show I’m A Celebrity where he competed in bush tucker trials with other stars in the Australian jungle.

Lembit was born in Bangor, County Down but his parents were from Estonia and fled to Northern Ireland after the Soviet Union, under Joseph Stalin, annexed Estonia.
