Hundreds of onlookers lined Whitby’s piers to watch competitors take their chances with the greasy pole.

After almost an hour of failed attempts, almost theres and nowhere near it was a newcomer to the Regatta and the event that took the flag.

Stuart Butler (37) of Beverley won this year’s greasy pole trophy after having entered for a bit of fun.

He told the Gazette: “I come to Whitby quite often but this is the first time I have been to the Regatta and done this. It just seemed a good idea and good fun.”
