A COUPLE who emigrated to Australia but returned to Whitby’s shores when they got homesick, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday.

John and Audrey Hansell were married at St Hilda’s Church on 6 October 1951, shortly before John completed two years’ National Service.

Audrey, originally from County Durham, came to live with her aunt in Whitby after securing a job at the town’s tailors.

The couple met at the local youth club and this was the beginning of much club involvement, including the Friendship rowing club, Arcadian football club and the golf club.

They also spent seven years living in Australia.

When asked the secret to a long marriage, Audrey said: “perseverence and a lot of patience”, with John adding “and lots of love”.

Between them they have three children, named Elain, Carol and David, and seven grandchildren.

Daughter Carol hosted a big family party for the couple on Saturday, but on the day itself they are celebrating at home with friends.
