THE HEROES Welcome campaign in Whitby has been give the Royal seal of approval.
Former military man John Senior who kick-started the campaign in the town has been invited to the official Buckingham Palace Garden party which is taking place on Wednesday 29 June.
It is because of the campaign which started with a poster in his restaurant window and has now been extended to dozens of towns and cities across the country.
A few years ago John was disgusted to hear about a soldier being turned away from a hotel because he was in uniform and handwrote a poster to let service personnel know they were more than welcome in his Scarborough restaurant.
The restaurant next door saw it and wanted one and by the end of the day they were half way down the sea front.
In October John helped to launch the scheme in Whitby which has been backed by taxi drivers, pubs, guest houses and shops throughout town.
It has just launched in Filey and Middlesborough meaning our serving soldiers and veterans are welcome all the way up and down the east coast.
John said: “An invite came through from the Lord Commissioner’s department saying ‘her majesty requests the pleasure of your company’. I am delighted, it was a great privilege to get the information through and I understand it is because of all the work done for Heroes Welcome.
“When I first started I never expected it to go further than three cafes on the sea front. I will tell the Queen about Whitby and Scarborough being the two most beautiful resorts in the whole of the UK.
“They are quality resorts, if you mention Whitby to anybody people say I know exactly where that it and it all started here.”
