operations at Whitby Hospital will be suspended from Monday because of concerns the ventilation system is inadequate.
Consultants, microbiologists and the NHS North Yorkshire and York PCT met yesterday and procedures such as endoscopies which had already been pencilled in will be rescheduled.
Mike Proctor, Chief Executive at Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said it was during an annual check that the ventilation system was found to be “performing below the required standards”.
Patients who have recently undergone treatment are not thought to be at risk and health bosses have apologised for the inconvenience and worry caused to patients.
He added: “We are reviewing those patients who are due to have their procedures in the coming days, and will weigh the balance of risk as to whether rescheduling their procedure is a greater risk to them than allowing it to take place.”
