An award-winning restaurant that helped change the eating out culture in Whitby closed down yesterday after 15 years.
Chef Rob Green and wife Emma decided not to renew the lease at Green’s so that they can concentrate on new ventures, leaving customers and locals stunned.
A notice was put on the door and on the website on Tuesday which read: “It is with regret that Green’s of Whitby will close as of today, 26th January 2016.
“May we take this opportunity to thank our staff, customers and suppliers for their loyal support over the last 15 years.”
The couple said they had had a “fantastic 15 years and achieved great things” one of which being awarded best restaurant in the 2010 Northern Hospitality Awards.
Rob was named national Seafood Chef of the Year in 2009 and Green’s was featured in The Good Food Guide and the Michelin Guide for eight consecutive years.
Emma told the Gazette: “It was a difficult decision and we did not do it light heartedly and our concern was for our staff, but there are other things we want to do.
“My sculpture business has really taken off and Rob has other opportunities lined up that he wants to go ahead with and will still be involved in the culinary world.
“Rob played a big part in dining in Whitby and North Yorkshire. Whitby now has some fantastic bars and restaurants and we are looking forward to being able to try some of them now.
“We started the restaurant together and are going to move on to new things together.”
