BEING able to smile when things go wrong is the golden secret for a Whitby couple celebrating 50 years of marriage this weekend.
Dennis and Marion Andrew (nee) Walker of Spring Vale were married on 16 March, 1963 at Coatham Church in Redcar but have spent most of their married life actively involved in the Whitby community.
They met at a dance in Redcar and Dennis (73) was a steelworker at Skinningrove. He moved to RAF Fylingdales and was chairman of the Transport and General Workers’ Union before moving to Boulby Mine for the next 23 years.
He was a shotfirer and overseer before retiring.
Marion (72) worked at the Town Tailors factory in town.
The couple, who have two sons, Graham and Shaun, are both members at the Fishermen’s Club and Dennis was in the Labour Party in the 1970s and 80s.
Despite travelling far and wide during their marriage Dennis and Marion have never missed a Whitby Gazette – and will be celebrating the anniversary with a holiday with their two sons.
Dennis added: “We are both an equal person, share decisions and do them together. One thing we have always said is be able to smile when things go wrong.”
