During a visit to RAF Fylingdales this week, ahead of the base’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Karl Hansell got to test out the nuclear hotline.
Located deep within the base’s operations centre, the pink phone is connected by a hardline underneath the Atlantic to the Cheyenne Mountain Range to the American Air Force.
In the case of an emergency it would be used to alert them of an impending missile threat.
If a confirmed missile launch is detected, it could be the very phone used to announce the start of a nuclear conflict and so much be checked every morning.
No pressure for Karl then!
