Whitby Lighthouse, which has guided shipping for nearly 200 years, is to get an £86,000 restoration after being closed for four years and is set to be revived as a tourist
attraction.

Alex Richards, of Scarborough Council’s regeneration department, said: “With no funding to rectify the problems the building has continued to deteriorate steadily, both
internally and externally, in the intervening period.”

In a report to councillors he adds that it was open for many years to the public as a historic attraction. “Due to its deterioration the Whitby community now see this asset as a sad and prominent indicator of decline and neglect.”
