Sir Leon Brittan, the ex-MP for Cleveland and Whitby, has passed away following a long battle with cancer.

He was elected to parliament as the town’s MP in the general election of February 1974 and remained in the post until June 1983.

Later that year, Brittan became the youngest Home Secretary since Sir Winston Churchill.

He subsequently occupied a number of posts within the European Commission, including the position of Vice-President in 1999.
