Five people have been arrested as police continue their investigations into the robbery at Gouldbuys jewellery store in Whitby.

Those arrested include four men, two aged 18 and one aged 19 from Whitby, one aged 25 from Saltburn and a woman aged 21 from Saltburn.

They have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.

Gouldbuys was held up on Friday May 1 at around 12.30pm by a male robber armed with what police believe was a firearm.

Police say staff at the Flowergate store were “very shaken up” after the thief threatened them before fleeing the store with gold jewellery, leaving in the direction of Silver Street and Belle Vue Terrace.

He was then seen to get into a small grey or blue hatchback car.

As as part of their enquiries, officers are appealing for information.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 and pass information to the Force Control Room.
