A young minke whale swimming alongside and under two pleasure boats off Robin Hood’s Bay was just one of the marine animals spotted along off the coast in the past week.

Sightings over the 12th Sea Watch Foundation National Whale and Dolphin Watch which ran until Sunday included at least five or six minke whales, many harbour porpoise and more than 50 gannets as well as white beaked dolphins.

Robin Petch from Seawatch said: “The most notable encounter was on Saturday morning when a juvenile or young adult minke (pictured above) took a great interest in the Esk Belle III and Kerrera just off Robin Hood’s Bay repeatedly approaching and passing beneath both vessels.”
