A BIT of an exotic visitor, usually seen in southern Europe and North Africa, dropped by Whitby this week.
Whitby Gazette reader Allen Grant spotted a Humming Bird Hawk Moth enjoying the warm weather and feeding on flowers in Raglan Terrace on Sunday.
While feeding it hovers and makes an audible humming noise - making it look a bit like a hummingbird.
It flies during the day especially in bright sunshine which Whitby enjoyed over the weekend.
The Humming Bird Hawk Moth is distributed from Portugal to Japan but is only sometimes seen in the UK and parts of Europe.
Mr Grant said: “I have seen them before here but never as early as this one. I have reported the sighting to the butterfly conservation people.”
