STAFF from a local charity shop and members of the council’s recycling team took part in a sponsored walk and cleaned up the beach at the same time.

The litter pick on the stretch of beach between Whitby and Sandsend was organised by Natalie Mallam, manager of the Sue Ryder shop.

Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) provided the bags and collected the ten bags of rubbish after the event which raised about £200.

Natalie said: “The sponsored walk was aimed at raising much needed funds for the Sue Ryder charity. We also thought it would be great opportunity to clean the area as we walked which is when we contacted the Council to support us.”

It is hoped it could become an annual event.

Donna Gaddass, Recycling Education Officer, Scarborough Borough Council added: “We are always happy to help with charitable community events and we hope that by taking part in the event, it will encourage the rest of the community to come forward and volunteer in the future”.
