A HEADteacher’s love of 1950s America has seen her school dining room transformed into an all-American diner.

Christina Zanelli, head of West Cliff Primary School said: “The school’s dining room was due for refurbishment – it hadn’t been done since the school opened around 30 years ago.

“The cost of the refurbishment had to come out of the school budget so to keep the costs down we decided to do it ourselves as a summer holiday project.”

Christine explained that the idea to transform it into an American-style diner came from pupil Max Burnett, aged 10.

She said: “Our former caretaker Trevor Parker, who’s retired, came to put down the floor, and my daughter Annabel, aged six, helped me paint the walls.

“Teacher Emma Whisker and her dad Ian made a huge American flag for the back wall.

“The entire project really was a labour of love.”

There’s even a jukebox playing 1950s music, and the staff held a grand launch of the dining room with American-style food featuring hamburgers and milk shakes.

Christine said: “It’s brilliant, eating there is a real pleasure and now it’s becoming quite well-known in the area.

“When I retire I’m going to do the same in my house.”
