Work began this week on Whitby’s War Memorial as those behind the project gathered to celebrate its construction.
Scaffold was due to go up this week while the memorial itself, made of local sandstone and portice lattice - which is a type of granite - will take two weeks to complete.
Town mayor Coun John Freeman said: “We’ve had tremendous support from all sorts of people.” The memorial which is to be sited on Dock End will be officially unveiled on Saturday 8 June when it will be dedicated.
Coun Freeman added: “I’m really looking forward to it. A small band of councillors have worked really hard with a lot of local support.”
