That vehicle then collided with three other vehicles, driving in the opposite direction - a Honda CRV, Ford Fiesta and BMW 5 Series.

Two passengers in the Mercedes were also injured and taken to James Cook University Hospital by land ambulance but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Highways officials estimated that the road would be closed for at least two hours while debris was cleared.
