Police in Whitby are warning people, especially visitors to the town, to make sure belongings are safe and secure.
Local inspector, Andy Colbourne has issued the appeal as the town heads into its busy summer season.
He said: “As we approach the busy season in town and rural communities there will be an influx of tourists which will create an enjoyable environment from which we will all benefit.
“I would add to that the need to ensure vehicles are left secure and preferably in areas where there is street lighting. Also be mindful of valuables that may be on display so as not to tempt any opportunist criminal.
“It is also imperative home owners or those with holiday lets and caravans ensure they maintain security to act as a deterrent for those intent on committing crime. Whitby remains a safe place to live work and visit and we want this to continue throughout 2013.
