ONE police officer was left with a suspected broken rib and another with bruising to his arms and legs after a fracas while trying to make an arrest in Whitby town centre.

The officers had been called out following reports the landlord of the Pier Inn had been assaulted after asking someone to leave the premises.

Officers tried to make an arrest in Haggersgate at about 4.45pm on Sunday when the man lashed out.

Police say they are making further enquiries but a 21-year-old local man has been arrested and released on police bail until 29 April.
