WHITBY businesses are being urged to be careful, after reports of an attempted telephone scam.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) is warning companies of a man ringing up to try and sell advertising space in publications, on behalf of the fire service, in the Whitby area and the rest of the borough.
The caller is said to be ‘very convincing’, but the NYFRS say that they do not have any agencies that would be ringing up businesses on their behalf.
The fire service is urging people to check the identification of anyone ringing up claiming to work for them and trying to sell advertising space by calling (01609) 780150.
If someone turns up in person claiming to work for the NYFRS, then businesses are urged to ask for ID, as all staff carry identification cards, or should be wearing uniform.
