A 29-year-old man is in custody following a sneak-in burglary at a Skinner Street bakery.

It occurred at 4pm on Thursday at Botham and Sons when the keys to a Volkswagen Golf were taken from a staff area and the vehicle was then stolen.

The car was later found in Middlesbrough, shortly before 10pm that night. The man driving the Golf, crashed the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

As a result of the collision, the passenger suffered a minor head injury and was arrested on suspicion of the burglary in Whitby, as well as offences committed in the Cleveland area.

Inspector Andy Colbourne, who leads Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This arrest shows the determination of both North Yorkshire and Cleveland police to take the fight against travelling criminal to the offenders. If you can help to identify the driver of the car who fled the scene, I urge you to come forward and contact the police straight away.”
