Police are warning people to be aware of doorstep crime after a man tried to buy jewellery from houses on a Whitby street.

A man said to be in his 40s with a Cockney accent and mousey hair was going from door to door on Byland Road inquiring about items last Thursday.

It is the latest of several similar incidents along the Yorkshire coast.

There have been 20 distraction burglaries across the county since June with people posing as gold buyers, handymen, fish sellers and even someone replying to an advert for a lost dog.

Police say lock doors even when you are at home and check who people are before letting them in.
